Depression During Pregnancy

Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders and symptoms occur in 8 to 38% of pregnant women. Pregnancy depression is defined as the occurrence of depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities along with symptoms that can include disturbance in appetite, weight, sleep, energy, and concentration. Presence of suicidal thoughts and feelings of worthlessness or guilt are also signs of depression.

Pregnancy depression is a life-altering event that can cause women to feel anxious, scared and often stressed. Prenatal depression seems to be increased in the first trimester, suggesting it is the time of maximum vulnerability. Experts believe that the rapid increase in hormone levels at the start of pregnancy can disrupt brain chemistry and lead to depression.

Pregnancy depression can increase your risk of pre-term labor and lower birth rate. Counseling, as well as medication, have been shown to be effective in lessening depression and reducing the incident of postpartum depression. If you’re uncertain about your state of mind, I would seek the opinion of your obstetric care provider. Don’t be shy about letting your doctor know if you feel low. Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health.

If you’ve experienced three or more of the following symptoms for more than two weeks, talk to your health care provider about whether you should see a therapist:

• A sense that nothing feels enjoyable or fun anymore
• Feeling blue, sad, or “empty” for most of the day, every day
• Find it’s harder to concentrate
• Extreme irritability or agitation or excessive crying
• Trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time
• Extreme or never-ending fatigue
• A desire to eat all the time or not wanting to eat at all
• Inappropriate guilt or feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness

Preparing Siblings for New Baby

It is very common in families for children to feel bummed about the new baby on the way. Feelings of resentment, jealousy and unhappiness start to develop as the date gets closer. In some cases your child may feel excited about their new little brother or sister to be born, these feelings may arise after your new baby is delivered. Children often worry that a baby will in some way replace them as mommy’s special little girl or boy.

And when your child sees all the attention you’re giving to your new baby, she’ll become even more concerned. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent your child feeling this way, and help ensure a happy household with your growing family…

Get Your Child Involved
Try to involve your older child in decision making while preparing for the baby like deciding on a name or a nursery theme. It will help your child to see that he/she plays an important roll in the family.

1-On-1 Time
It can be so easy to put aside the one-on-one time when you are preparing for your new baby or when he/she arrives. Of course, the most recent addition to the family will demand a great deal of your time but it is very important to set aside quality time with your other child. Your child really needs your undivided attention every so often. Be sure when you schedule this one-on-one time that you are not holding the baby and have the least amount of interruptions.

Encourage time together
Encouraging your child to spend time with the baby will greatly improve the chances of her accepting her new brother or sister. Sometimes it takes just two or three bonding sessions for feelings of rivalry to be replaced with love and affection. But remember, no matter how well your young child seems to be getting along with your baby, never stop giving that special attention.

Don’t expect instant love
Many parents expect their children to instantly fall in love with the newest addition to the family. Although some children do, most kids will take a little while to get used to their baby brother or sister. It’s perfectly understandable for them to initially feel indifferent or indeed jealous of the new addition. Be patient and soon you’ll be one big happy family.

Fun Ways to Announce Pregnancy

Weither it’s your first, second, third or fourth — announcing your pregnancy to friends and family is always full of mixed reactions. With this pregnancy, have fun with it like Jessica Simpson did when she announced her pregnancy on Halloween by dressing up as a “Mummy”! Here are some creative, cute and sentimental ways to announce your pregnancy.

Surprise! Surprise! Bake a cake with a little plastic baby or pacifier inside. Then have both your parents over for dinner and when it’s time for dessert, have one of your parents cut the cake to find the surprise.

Sports Fans. For those who are sports fans, buy matching jerseys of your partner’s favorite sports team for him and the new baby-on-the-way. Take it a step further and personalize the shirts with your last name.

Movie Night. Have a baby themed movie night. Rent movies like “Nine Months,” “Baby Mama,” “Look Who’s Talking,” “Juno,” or “Knocked Up.” Kick it up a notch and some baby snacks like baby carrots, pacifier candies and baby snap peas. You can do this pregnancy announcement with your spouse or friends.

Big Brother. Buy a “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” tee for the youngest child that you already have and take a visit to your friends and families house.

Family Tree. Start a family tree with pictures of grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, aunts etc. Underneath the spot for your immediate family, put a picture of a stork and the baby’s due date. Share it at a family gathering.

Smart Phone Friendly. Download an ap where you can “morph” you and your spouses faces together to show what your child may look like. Then text him the picture of your new family member.

Send Him to the Store. Ask your spouse to stop by the grocery store on the way home from work and text him a list of pregnancy related items: saltine crackers, pickles, ice cream and prenatal vitamins. You’ll be getting a call shortly.
Baby on Board. Hang a “Baby On Board” sign in your spouse’s drivers side window.

Just Became A Daddy. Decorate your spouse’s car in pink and blue ribbons and bows. Write on the car with white car friendly paint “Just Became A Daddy”

Show The Signs. Post blue and pink signs on your street so he can see them as he drives home from work. Write “Congratulations (name) you are going to be a Daddy”.

Scavenger Hunt. Have a scavenger hunt in your home. Put little items round the house with a note leading him to the next item. Use things like your wedding picture, his baby picture and your baby picture, a baby bottle, a baby book and eventually lead him to a pregnancy test.

Chinese Please. Order in chinese and slide a little note in the fortune cookie that says “We are having a baby” or “You’re going to be a dad”. You can also have fortune cookies made with a custom message.

Maternity Leave Checklist

Preparing for a new baby can be quite stressful considering all you have to get in order beforehand. The list of things to do can go on and on but one of the most important is getting your maternity leave in order. You may be thinking that this is some simple form to fill out but it’s so much more than that. There are actually some very important things that you should know about taking a maternity leave.

First of all, what exactly is maternity leave?
If this is your first pregnancy and you’re currently working, you’re going to want to take a maternity leave. Maternity leave is an employee benefit that provides paid or unpaid time off work to recuperate from labor and care for your new baby or make arrangements for someone who can. Parental leave includes maternity, paternity, and adoption leave. The amount of days you’ll have off and whether or not you’ll get paid depends on where you work.

As you prepare to take maternity leave get as organized as possible. Start with a folder to put all your paperwork in. Keep copies of everything, including any forms you submit. Use this maternity leave checklist below to help make this process as easy and organized as possible. We’ve divided it up in trimesters so you don’t get too overwhelmed!

Maternity Leave Checklist – First Trimester
☐ Research what kind of maternity leave benefits your employer offers. You can find out by reviewing your employee handbook, asking other employees, or by taking a trip to the human resources department.

☐ Have your spouse check what benefits his employer offers for parental leave so he can be home to help with the baby while you recover.

☐ Read up on the state laws and regulations for maternity, medical and/or family leave for you and your employer. This will vary depending on which state you live in.

☐ If you don’t end up using prenatal bed rest during your pregnancy, start thinking about how much time you want to take off when your baby is born. Keep your finances in mind since this will be a big factor on what is necessary to accomplish maternity leave.

Maternity Leave Checklist – Second Trimester
☐ If you haven’t already, tell your boss or supervisor about your pregnancy. Letting them know that you’ll be taking a maternity leave and offer help to come up with a plan while on leave.

☐ Discuss your plan with human resources. Ask for copies of their maternity leave policy and any other leave and/or disability application forms needed.

☐ If you feel comfortable asking, try negotiating some extra time off! Maybe a flexible return schedule or a temporary work-from-home plan to benefit you and your employer. This is pretty common so don’t be afraid to ask, just don’t wait until the last minute.

☐ Use the research that you’ve made to put together a written plan so you don’t forget the exact dates of leaving, returning and if extensions will be available.

Maternity Leave Checklist – Third Trimester
☐ Start wrapping up any unfinished projects. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have time towards the end because the baby will be here before you know it and they don’t wait for anyone!

☐ Make sure all your paperwork is filled out and turned in when necessary.

☐ Be sure to find out who will be handling your emails and workload while out.

☐ If you’ve reached this checkmark, take a deep breath and feel confident! Now, start working on your hospital bag checklist!

Bleeding During Pregnancy

When experiencing bleeding during pregnancy, our first reaction is to worry. However, pregnancy bleeding is actually quite common, particularly during the first trimester. In most cases it turns out to be something minor, which is why it’s important to get informed about bleeding during pregnancy because it will help you to take proper precaution and eliminate unnecessary worry.

About 10% of all women experience some type of light bleeding during pregnancy. This bleeding, though, is not the same as getting your period. One of the most important things to do is to determine whether you’re spotting or bleeding since they are very different symptoms that can indicate totally different issues. So how is spotting different from bleeding? Spotting is very light bleeding, similar to what you may have at the beginning or end of your period. It can vary in color from pink to red to brown (like dried blood). For spotting during pregnancy you may need to use a panty liner but nothing more than that. If you find it to be a little heavier than that and you find yourself needing to use better protection, this would be considered pregnancy bleeding.

So what causes pregnancy spotting or bleeding?

Well to start, you can never be too sure on what causes pregnancy bleeding so it’s always best to contact your doctor or midwife to be safe and get a professional opinion. Here are some of the most common causes:

Sex – More blood flows to your cervix during pregnancy, so it’s not unusual to notice spotting after intercourse. A cervical polyp (a benign growth on the cervix) can also cause spotting or bleeding after sex.

Pap Smear or Internal Exam – Many pregnant women experience spotting after a pap smear or internal exam for the same reasons – greater blood flow to the cervix or a cervical polyp. Your doctor will usually give you a heads up about this before leaving the doctors office.

Implantation Bleeding – Some say that bleeding may occur very early in pregnancy, possibly before you realize you’re pregnant. The fertilized egg burrowing into the wall of your uterus may cause this implantation bleeding, but no one knows for sure. This type of bleeding usually lasts a day or two.

Miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy – Spotting or bleeding, especially if accompanied by abdominal pain or cramping, can be an early sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo implants outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. This can be life-threatening, which is one of the reasons it’s important to let your practitioner know immediately if you have bleeding or pain in your first trimester. If you have an ultrasound that shows a normal heartbeat between 7 and 11 weeks, your chances of continuing the pregnancy are greater than 90 percent.

Placental problems or premature labor – In the second or third trimester, bleeding or spotting can be a sign of a serious condition such as placenta previa, placental abruption, a late miscarriage (between 13 weeks and mid-pregnancy), or premature labor (which can happen between mid-pregnancy and 37 weeks). Placental abruption is when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before or during labor. Only 1% of pregnant women have this problem, and it usually occurs during the last 12 weeks of pregnancy. Even first-trimester bleeding may be a sign of an underlying problem with the placenta. Research shows a link between early pregnancy bleeding and a greater chance of later complications, such as preterm delivery or placental abruption, especially if bleeding is heavy.

Preparing for Labor – If your cervix begins to dilate as your body prepares for labor you may pass your mucus plug. It may have a little blood, which is why it’s also referred to as “bloody show.” If you’ve made it to 37 weeks, then passing your mucus plug is totally normal. However, if there’s more than a tinge of blood, or you have any other spotting or bleeding, be sure to call your practitioner.

Infections – Spotting can also be caused by conditions unrelated to pregnancy, such as vaginal infections and bladder infections. The cervix also becomes very friable, which means it can bleed easily because of the increased blood flow. If you have intercourse, there can also be a small amount of bleeding. Sometimes there is a small polyp or lesion that might bleed more in early pregnancy. If you think you may have any type of infection be sure to contact your doctor immediately for proper treatment.

Rh-negative Blood Type – If you’re having pregnancy spotting or bleeding and your blood type is Rh-negative, you’ll need a shot of Rh immune globulin. However, if you know for sure that the baby’s father’s blood is also Rh-negative or if it’s clear that the bleeding is not coming from the uterus, you do not need the shot.

IMPORTANT: If you’re experiencing pregnancy bleeding or spotting call your doctor or midwife right away. Even if you think it’s something minor or if the bleeding seems to have stopped be sure to always keep your health-care professional informed every step of the way. What your health-care practitioner does next will depend on your individual situation. If you’re unable to get a hold of your doctor or midwife and the bleeding hasn’t stopped, be sure to go straight to the emergency room. You’ll probably need an evaluation, which may include a physical exam, an ultrasound, and blood tests, to make sure you and your baby are fine and to rule out any complications.
